Dreamers and Allies Run
Dreamers and Allies Run began as way to represent undocumented students during the Chicago Marathon 2012. Hugo Dominguez, founder of this great project, simply wanted to run the marathon in conjunction with other runners while wearing a t-shirt to represent the struggle of students without documents. He didn’t stop there, and then proposed to use the project as a way to provide economic assistance for undocumented students to continue their education. The best thing is that two other role models in our community were eager to join the cause, José Alonso and Yazmin Velázquez, who ran the marathon and fund raised 26 miles x $26 each.
Several organizers, volunteers, and sponsors, united forces and resources to make this effort a success. Last night all the hard work finally payed off when for the first time we awarded 9 scholarships (3 partial) to hard working students of our community. We wish we were able to offer more scholarships to aid all of our applicants, but like always resources are limited. Although the awards are modest compared to other scholarships we hope that these students value and appreciate the effort of all the people involved to support their dreams.
Thank you to all for standing up for our youth and for education!!!!”-José Alonso.
